Currently, it's 10 p.m. on a Thursday night and all I want to do is fall asleep but my computer is being a piece of poop. In my attempt to write this post it has been so kind as to crash twice. Maybe this is a sign I spend too much time on my computer? ANYWAYS I have an unhealthy obsession with reading articles on the Internet so I thought for this week's Friday Five I would talk about a few of my favorites websites I like to visit. Seriously, I’ll read anything from "Why Coconut Oil is Good for You" to "How to Sleep Better at Night” but let's get real for a second, the Internet is getting filled with all sorts of 'self-help’ articles and it’s getting a little overwhelming. Even to this day my friend always makes fun of me for taking the advice in the articles a little too literal. But I can't help it! What did people do before the Internet? Only kidding.
1. The Everygirl
I wanted to start out the list with one of my all-time favorites -- The Everygirl. I big fan mostly because it was created by two awesome girl bosses from Chicago but also because they write some really great content for women in their twenties. *Fun fact* I found The Windy City Blogger Collective on their site. They have a job listings tab and I remember as I headed into my senior year of college I was still unsure what type of internship I wanted to apply for which is when I happened across the WCBC internship position and the rest is history.
4. Medium
Every so often I head over to Medium. Which is an online publication created by the same guy who created Twitter. His goal was to create a place where writers could go to get their content out in the world without the distractions of other sites, i.e. photos, fancy fonts, etc. It’s very streamline which I like and it’s interesting to read the perspective of people with different views. I know when the election was going on, I couldn’t wrap my head around why people were voting for specific candidates but after reading a few articles on Medium I began to understand their reasons and began to accept the fact that people are going to vote for candidates for a mulititude of different reasons.
2. Refinery29
All I have to say is Refinery29 is the bomb — my dream job would be to work for this company. They do such a good job of blending together lifestyle stories with pop culture. Plus, they have some killer graphic designer who create amazing art for the site.
3. Man Repeller
I really like Man Repeller’s humorous approach to fashion. The founder, Leandra Medine, felt that there was an area of fashion that wasn't getting the attention it deserved: trends that women love but men can't stand. I can name a few off the top of my head...high waisted shorts anyone?
5. The Lala
This website is to G-O-A-T (‘greatest of all time’ for all you older readers). Especially for girls in their early twenties. Even though I graduated college 10 months ago — I still can’t believe it’s been that long — I still enjoy reading the articles on The Lala because they're written by girls around my age on topics that are relevant. Also, they aren’t afraid to talk about the current issues facing women in today’s society.
A little extra:
I found Harness Magazine a few months ago and immediately fell in love with their mission. They encourage women to speak their mind through a welcoming platform whether it’s through poetry, artwork or perspective articles (they actually published one of my blog posts which you can find here).
What are some of your favorite websites? I’d loved to check them out!
